Wellington Arch

 back to sights listing

London's famous landmark at Hyde Park Corner was recently saved from ruin and returned to its full glory by English Heritage. From viewing platforms beneath the Arch's magnificent sculpture (Peace descending on the Chariot of War), exceptional views of the surrounding parks and the London skyline can be seen from high above the swirling traffic. It is a great place to watch the mounted Horse Guards, which pass between its majestic columns every day. Exhibitions inside tell of the Arch's fascinating history and introduce the statues and memorials of London.

This monument was built in honour of The Duke of Wellington in 1828 as the northern gateway into Buckingham Palace, and now stands on the island in the middle of the traffic that circumnavigates Hyde Park Corner.

The neoclassical arch, England's answer to the Arc de Triomphe is one of the most splendid landmarks in London, Wellington Arch and is now open to the public for the first time in its history. Originally designed in 1825 in honour of The Duke of Wellington as a grand entrance to Buckingham Palace, the Arch has had a fascinating history of attention and neglect, praise and ridicule, and was last home to London's smallest police station.

Also sometimes called "Constitution Arch", this structure originally had a huge statue of the Duke of Wellington on his horse atop but a major road widening of Piccadilly in 1882, due to the increasing demands of Victorian traffic, was used as an excuse to remove the oversized statue to Aldershot. In 1912 the magnificent statue 'Peace Descending on the Quadriga of War' was placed on top of the Arch, and remains today the largest bronze sculpture in the country.

With dramatic views down Constitution Hill and across central London from the Arch's spacious balconies, Wellington Arch is a novel and unique place to impress guests.
