back to sights listingVauxhall Bridge links Pimlico to Vauxhall on the South Bank. Vauxhall Bridge has a good view to Lambeth Bridge and the Houses of Parliament beyond. The statues decorating the bridge piers on one side represent the arts, astronomy, education and government. On the other side highlights of engineering, agriculture, pottery and architecture are presented.
The original bridge on this site was named after the Prince Regent and was the first iron bridge to cross the river. It went up in 1809 but by 1879 was found to be in a dangerous condition. The present bridge replaced it in 1906.
