Syon Park Syon Park is the London home of the Duke of Northumberland and is set within 200 acres of parkland on the banks of the River Thames opposite Kew Gardens. The biggest single attraction is probably the magnificent Syon House itself with its expansive 30 acre gardens, designed in the mid-18th century by Capability Brown. The gardens incorporate the Great Conseratory, a Rose Garden. Flora's Lawn and over 200 species of rare trees. The House was built on the site of a medieval abbey, dissolved by King Henry VIII - his coffin, lying at Syon on its way to Windsor for burial, burst open during the night and in the morning, dogs were found licking up the remains! Divine judgement for his desecration of the abbey? In the 1760s, Robert Adam created some of his finest work inside Syon for the first Duke of Northumberland, leading Sir John Betjamin to describe it as the "Grand Architectural Walk". As well as Snakes and Ladders, the estate is home to a number of other attractions including the London Butterfly House, The Aquatic Experience and a large Wyevale Garden Centre. |
