Royal Mews Along the road from Buckingham Palace there is the Royal Mews. These were built in 1824, originally as a home for falcons (the name comes from the word "mewing" which means feather shedding). Today it is the place where you can see the cars, carriages and even the horses that are used to transport the royal family. The highlight of the display is the Gold State Coach, which is used for coronations - it was made in 1761 for George III and weights four tons. The Gold State Coach is covered with 22 carat gold gilding and needs eight horses to pull it! |
