National Maritime Museum The National Maritime Museum is now fully open after a multi-million pound refurbishment for the millennium celebrations. Children now can go in free to see this fascinating treasure of shipping history. Many relics and story-boards. The Sea comes alive! Greenwich is the home of the largest maritime museum in the world. It embraces the traditions, the smells and the sounds of the sea that washes its feet and includes some of the most classically beautiful buildings in Britain. An ever-changing range of exhibitions and initiatives brings sparkle and expectancy to the life of the Museum. In the Neptune Court alone there are twelve galleries. The panelled Library could have been taken from an Oxbridge college, with its magnificent collection of maritime books dating back to 1420, and research facilities. A huge glass roof has been added to create Neptune Court. The entrance is dominated by a lighthouse lamp and an enormous ship's propeller. Inside Neptune Court you can see close-up everything from Royal barges that ferried monarch's up and down the River Thames to Greenpeace capsules. Go upstairs to the Nelson Exhibition and get a pigeon eye view of Nelson whose body lies in state in Greenwich just a few yards from this spot after the Battle of Trafalgar. |
