Savoy Hotel, * * * * * The Savoy was built when Richard D'Oyly Carte decided that with the success of The Savoy Theatre the audience needed a place to stay after the show. The Savoy opened its doors to an eager public in 1889. The hotel took five years and vast expense to complete and, when it opened on 6 August 1889, incorporated unheard of features, including full electric lighting and what for the time was a startling number of baths: 67 in total. Designed to a high standard, the hotel offers comfortable accommodation for both the business and leisure traveller alike. With lovely views over the Embankment Gardens and the River Thames, the River Restaurant features a menu that combines contemporary and classical dishes with great skill. The atmosphere is relaxed and entertaining with live music in the evenings, piano music from Monday to Thursday and a band with dancing and entertainment on Friday and Saturday. The newly restored Savoy Grill’s menu reflects the chef’s fondness for modern European dishes and Savoy Grill classics. The Upstairs Restaurant, with its large windows overlooking the front entrance, offers a menu featuring traditional Mediterranean cuisine and has a variety of light, healthy contemporary dishes. The beautifully designed Fitness Gallery is situated on the third floor above the historic Savoy Theatre. Meeting and banquet facilities at the hotel include 10 event rooms, with state-of-the-art facilities, for hosting business and social gatherings of every description up to 120 persons.
